Slouching Towards Bethlehem

Slouching Towards Bethlehem showcases Joan Didion’s unique and personal style of writing, a clear example of the New Journalism taking hold in the 1960s. Her essays are rich with details and focus on the stories of Californians. These include Lucille Marie Maxwell Miller of San Bernardino, Deadeye (in the Haight-Ashbury at the end of the Summer of Love), as well as personal essays on the subjects of notebooks and the Santa Ana wind state of mind. As a collection, Slouching Towards Bethlehem tells the story of California at a pivotal moment in time, one that we still feel today. Didion creates a mood that we'll attempt to capture at this book club dinner. We hope you'll join us!

About Flora's Book Club

Flora's book club is a monthly, reservations-based, dinner series. We share our thoughts on a book while enjoying a prix fixe dinner and drink that it inspired. Our intention is to create a space for community and conversation. Reservations are limited, as we want our dinner to be conducive to conversation. We choose books that we love or that have special meaning to us. These selections are a work in progress, so please share your suggestions!
