There There

Our August book club selection is Pulitzer Prize finalist Tommy Orange’s debut novel There There. In Orange’s book, we follow the convergent paths of twelve urban Native Americans, some connected through the bond of family, some finding their way to the Big Oakland Powwow, each searching to find their place. With his elegant and direct style of writing, Orange is able to tell stories that are difficult and heartbreaking, yet full of humanity. We live in a complicated world. Our dynamic city of Oakland in many ways functions much like a character in the book, portrayed in a way only an author born and raised here could do it. We're looking forward to our next book club dinner and hope you'll join us!

About Flora's Book Club

Flora's book club will be an ongoing, monthly-ish, reservation-based dinner series. A book will be selected and will be accompanied by a prix fixe four-course dinner that it inspired. Our intention is to create a space for community and conversation. Reservations will be limited, as we want our dinner to be conducive to conversation. We're choosing books we love or that have special meaning to us. Our book club selections are a work in progress, so please share your suggestions!
