Flora menus reservations about news book club contact

The Portable Dorothy Parker

The often quoted Dorothy Parker seemed like the perfect read for our first book club dinner. In her writing, Parker captured the roaring 20s. She took her seat at the Algonquin Round Table and, along with her fellow New York literati, she helped start The New Yorker magazine. Her essays, reviews, and poems were featured in Vanity Fair and she wrote a screenplay for a movie called A Star is Born, featuring Judy Garland. (Fun fact: Joan Didion revised the screenplay for the 70s version with Barbra Streisand.) Conversation points will include: How has feminism evolved since Parker's era? Was Parker’s voice well received at the time? Does it still have an impact today?

Due to the length of The Portable Dorothy Parker, we'll select a few specific stories/essays/poems to highlight. We don’t want this to feel like homework!
