Carter Beats the Devil

We could all use a little more magic in our lives, right? That's why we selected Gold’s delightful Carter Beats the Devil for our June book club dinner. Gold’s book chronicles the life of Bay Area magician Charles Carter in the 1920s. The story begins at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco with the death of then President Warren Harding. Hours before his death, Harding participates in the final act of Carter’s performance, is there a connection? San Francisco detectives set out to find the truth and we, the readers, are treated to the life story and journey of illusionist Carter the Great. At Flora, we've been inspired by Carter from the beginning. Perhaps you've noticed the giant print hanging in our dining room? It's an original poster from his performances in the 30s. Later, Gold’s book inspired our cocktail by the same name. We're looking forward to sharing this magical dinner with you!

About Flora's Book Club

Flora's book club will be an ongoing, monthly-ish reservation-based dinner series. A book will be selected and will be accompanied by a prix fixe four-course dinner that it inspired. Our intention is to create a space for community and conversation. Reservations will be limited, as we want our dinner to be conducive to conversation. We're choosing books we love or that have special meaning to us. Our book club selections are a work in progress, so please share your suggestions!

Carter Beats the Devil: Book Club Dinner at Flora in Oakland, CA

“There were never moments in your life when you actually saw something end, for whether you knew it or not something else was always flowering. Never a disappearance, always a transformation.”
